We are writing to invite you to the first of a series
of highly focused workshops aimed at designing nuclear physics experiments
at the National Ignition Facility. Since September 2009 NIF has been
successfully commissioned using capsules containing pure deuterium
fuel and has already achieved neutron fluences in excess of 10^23
n/s/cm^2, temperatures well above 50 Million K and densities on the
order of 100 g/cm^3. These dense conditions give rise to a significant
flux of down-scattered neutrons with an effective temperature below
100 keV.. The end result is an environment similar to that found in
certain stellar interiors.
The goal of this workshop is to tap the expertise
of the nuclear science community to determine how the unique environment
present at NIF can be best used to address outstanding nuclear science
questions. As a result, we have chosen a narrow focus for this first
workshop: Neutron-capture nucleosynthesis in high energy density plasma
environments. The agenda of the meeting will include:
* A discussion of how NIF works and the fundamentals of Inertial Confinement
Fusion facilities.
* An overview of nuclear and plasma diagnostics in place and planned
for NIF.
* A review of state-of-the-art simulations of conditions in the NIF
capsule as a function of time.
* Presentations on the nuclear-plasma interactions and their role
in populating excited nuclear states and the determination of stellar
enhancement factors.
The workshop will take place at Lawrence Berkeley
National Laboratory March 23-25, 2010, with an optional tour of NIF
on Friday (March 26). Attendees will also receive a CD containing
information about the physical conditions achievable at NIF.
The success of any nuclear science program at NIF
depends on the input of experts in the field like you. We hope that
you will help us make this workshop a success.
