The Program for JINA Workshop

on Nuclear Physics & Astrophysics of Accreting Neutron Stars

Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics, Santa Barbara, CA

April 23-24, 2004

Day One

On the first day we will have four sessions of 20 minute talks followed always by 10 minutes for questions.

8:45-9:00

Introduction and logistics (Bildsten)

9:00-10:30

Session 1: Thermonuclear Flashes (Strohmayer, Heger, Fisker)

Strohmayer:

Puzzles for Type I Bursts

Heger:

Transition to Stable Burning in Numerical Calcs

Fisker:

Double Peaked Bursts as Nuclear Physics Constraints

10:45-12:15

Session 2: NS Seismology/Superburst (Chakrabarty, Piro, Cumming)

Chakrabarty:

Coherent Oscillations in Bursts and Accel. Searches

Piro:

Neutron Star Oscillations during Bursts

Cumming:

Superburst Theory and Observations

1:30-3:00pm

Session 3: Quiescent Emission/Deep Crust (Brown, Gupta, Wiescher)

Brown:

Deep Crustal Heating: Observations and Theory

Gupta:

Electron Capture Rate Calculations

Wiescher:

Pycnonuclear reactions in the crust

3:30-5:00pm

Session 4: New work (Ouellette, Chang, Peng)

Ouellette:

Neutron Star Crust Models

Chang:

Status of NS Redshift Measurements/Theory

Peng:

X-Ray bursts at low accretion rates including Diffusion

Hendrik and Lars will be responsible for taking note of the possible collaborations that might be formed, as well as open questions that were not resolved.

Dinner together at a local restaurant.

Day Two

GOAL: To hear new ideas and establish new collaborations.

9:00-10:00

Opening Brainstorm. Every participant must present at least one new idea

10:30-12:00

Bildsten and Schatz attempt to pull things together, and lead the crowd
towards a resounding conclusion

12:00-1:30pm

Lunch in Kohn Hall
